🕐 Emergency room: open 24/7
🚑 Emergency numbers: 166 (ambulance) · 112 (general emergency)

Open in its current premises in the Mournies district since 2000, Chania's "Agios Georgios" general hospital is the main public healthcare facility for the whole prefecture — and the place to know about for any visitor facing a serious health issue during their stay.

The building has several hundred beds and covers a wide range of specialities: internal medicine, cardiology (with a dedicated heart-attack unit), paediatrics, surgery, nephrology and dialysis, pulmonology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, as well as an intensive care unit and an emergency department open 24/7.

In an emergency in Greece, dial 166 for an ambulance or 112 as the general emergency number, available in all EU languages.

Gas stations

Six handy stations to fill up before hitting the road:

Good to know: in Crete you don't pump your own fuel — stay in the car, just open the fuel flap, and an attendant takes care of everything. Just tell them how much fuel you want (a full tank, or an amount in euros); the fuel type is marked inside the flap, so there's no need to specify it.
